- decompression sickness — a disorder characterized by severe pain in muscles and joints, cramp, and difficulty in breathing, caused by a sudden and sustained decrease in air pressure, resulting in the deposition of nitrogen bubbles in the tissues
- aeroembolism — an embolism of air bubbles often caused by surgery, induced abortion, or decompression sickness
- bends — the severe pain in the limbs, joints, and abdomen during decompression sickness
- air embolism — the presence in the tissues and blood of a gas, such as air or nitrogen bubbles, caused by an injection of air or, in the case of nitrogen, by an abrupt and substantial reduction in the ambient pressure
