also-ran — If you describe someone as an also-ran, you mean that they have been or are likely to be unsuccessful in a contest.

down-and-outer — without any money, or means of support, or prospects; destitute; penniless.
underprivileged — denied the enjoyment of the normal privileges or rights of a society because of low economic and social status.
