  • already — You use already to show that something has happened, or that something had happened before the moment you are referring to. Speakers of British English use already with a verb in a perfect tense, putting it after 'have', 'has', or 'had', or at the end of a clause. Some speakers of American English use already with the simple past tense of the verb instead of a perfect tense.
  • before — If something happens before a particular date, time, or event, it happens earlier than that date, time, or event.
  • earlier — in or during the first part of a period of time, a course of action, a series of events, etc.: early in the year.
  • formerly — in time past; in an earlier period or age; previously: a custom formerly observed.
  • late — occurring, coming, or being after the usual or proper time: late frosts; a late spring.
  • previously — coming or occurring before something else; prior: the previous owner.
  • erstwhile — Former.
  • at one time — If you say that something was the case at one time, you mean that it was the case during a particular period in the past.
  • back — If you move back, you move in the opposite direction to the one in which you are facing or in which you were moving before.
  • bygone — Bygone means happening or existing a very long time ago.
  • heretofore — before this time; until now.
  • long ago — of or relating to the distant past or to remote events; ancient: long-ago exploits remembered only in folk tales.
  • old — far advanced in the years of one's or its life: an old man; an old horse; an old tree.
  • once upon a time — at one time in the past; formerly: I was a farmer once; a once powerful nation.
  • one — being or amounting to a single unit or individual or entire thing, item, or object rather than two or more; a single: one woman; one nation; one piece of cake.
  • quondam — former; onetime: his quondam partner.
  • sometime — at some indefinite or indeterminate point of time: He will arrive sometime next week.

  • departed — Departed friends or relatives are people who have died.
  • above — If one thing is above another one, it is directly over it or higher than it.
  • ancient — Ancient means very old, or having existed for a long time.
  • antecedent — An antecedent of something happened or existed before it and was similar to it in some way.
  • anterior — Anterior describes a part of the body that is situated at or towards the front of another part.
  • first — being before all others with respect to time, order, rank, importance, etc., used as the ordinal number of one: the first edition; the first vice president.
  • past — gone by or elapsed in time: It was a bad time, but it's all past now.
  • prior — preceding in time or in order; earlier or former; previous: A prior agreement prevents me from accepting this.
  • aforementioned — If you refer to the aforementioned person or subject, you mean the person or subject that has already been mentioned.
  • aforesaid — Aforesaid means the same as aforementioned.
  • foregoing — previously stated, written, or occurring; preceding: The foregoing paragraph presents the problem.
  • once — at one time in the past; formerly: I was a farmer once; a once powerful nation.
  • one-time — having been as specified at one time; former: my one-time partners.
  • preceding — that precedes; previous: Refer back to the footnote on the preceding page.
